Shameful xenophobia from Daily Mail on Remembrance Sunday

There is an unsettling, ill-advised and, frankly, xenophobic article in today's Mail on Sunday. Suggesting that choosing to move to an hour ahead of GMT in winter and two hours ahead of GMT in summer would lead toward achieving "a map of a certain best-forgotten empire of 70 years ago" is downright stupid.

There has been a long debate about the merits of changing to a daylight saving model in winter. Frankly there are good arguments in terms of safety on one hand and productivity on the other. To suggest flippantly that this change will somehow achieve what Hitler and his thugs failed to do in the Second World War is cringingly insensitive. Particularly on the day The Queen led the country in remembering all those who have died defending the beliefs on this country.

The sacrifices of those who served, remembered today, mean Sir Paul Dacre can employ fools like Peter Hitchens to write this kind of dross. We also owe it to those who served defending democracy to ensure a sensible level of debate is applied to issues facing this country.
