The great American 'experiment': 2010 edition

It may be annoying how Americans bang on about their 'great experiment' when referring to democracy. Simon de Montfort or the Ancient Greeks might have something to say about that. This is by-the-by as there are few things in politics as gripping as an American election.

Right now they are voting in what has been termed a test of Obama's presidency. The best coverage through the night will be here.

Ahead of the results it is worth looking at the biggest historical swings in the House of Representatives. The Republicans lost 77 seats in 1922; Democrats lost 72 in 1938 and 61 in 1914.

So the Democrats are looking at the biggest loss in the House for 72 years. Should be interesting.
